Every Tuesday night, The Underground in Newcastle turns into a little slice of 1920s New York, minus the prohibition hangover. The music is high calibre improvised jazz played by folks who have travelled from near and far to perform in a room so intimate you can practically count the valves on the trumpet. It's the kind of listening environment where you sit up close, shut up, and let the saxophone do the talking. If that sounds too intense, Thursday nights are for the jazz jams, which are a bit more forgiving if you want to have a go yourself.
The whole thing is put on by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association Inc and The Grand Hotel, so you know it's the real deal. Get there early if you want a seat that doesn't require neck craning. There is a bar and a restaurant, it is family friendly and completely non smoking. Disabled access is available, but you will need to ring ahead for the specifics. Just remember, this is a listening club, so leave the table dancing for the wedding reception.
