Right, so there's an exhibition over in Nottingham, UK – a fair trot from Newcastle, Australia, unless you've got a seriously fast submarine or an endless supply of plane tickets. It's called FOREST, and it's running from the 24th of May right through to the 5th of October in 2025 at Nottingham Castle. Apparently, forests are a big deal, inspiring folks for ages. They're especially fond of their own Sherwood Forest there, famous for Robin Hood and a rather ancient stick of wood known as the Major Oak, which is apparently over a thousand years old and probably tired of all the fuss.
The exhibition itself dives into the mysterious world of tree-inspired art, showing how these leafy giants get artists thinking and creating. You'll find six brand new pieces commissioned especially for the Castle, alongside some artworks making their debut in the city, all nestled amongst prints, drawings, and photos from Nottingham's own collection. This includes a cracking big painting of the Major Oak from way back in 1882 by a local lad, Andrew MacCallum. Some artists get all personal about Sherwood Forest, while others cast a wider net, pondering everything from a casual stroll through the woods to heavier topics like grief, folklore, and even that little thing called climate change. A bunch of artists are featured, hailing from various spots including London, Leicester, and of course, Nottingham itself. And just when you thought it was all artistic fancy, they wrap things up with some clever research from the University of Nottingham, focusing on the Major Oak, which even helped one of the artists out. Sounds like a good reason for a very long holiday.
