On Tuesday nights The Underground in Newcastle becomes a cosy little listening room where accomplished musicians improvise jazz in a style that nods to 1920s New York, minus the literal smoke. Expect a rotating cast from the neighbourhood and beyond, and if you'd rather play than spectate, Thursdays are the open jazz jams.

Run by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association Inc and The Grand Hotel, the venue has a bar and a restaurant, is family friendly and non smoking. Get in early if you want a decent seat. Disabled access is available; contact the operator for details.
