This December, The Grainery in Newcastle is staging a live take on Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, where grumpy old Ebenezer Scrooge gets haunted by ghosts and learns that hoarding cash is no way to spend Christmas. Its the classic yarn of a miser turning into a festive softie, with solid storytelling and performances that pull you into foggy Victorian England, perfect for dragging the family along without anyone nodding off.

The Grainery has been churning out these theatre gems for years, pulling crowds from the Hunter Valley and further afield with their knack for creative twists and community vibes. If youre around on the 18th, its a low key chance to see Scrooge swap his bah humbugs for some actual cheer, proving even the tightest wallets can loosen up come yuletide.
