The Fort Scratchley Historical Society is putting on their Australia Day gun firing shindig, where seven of the forts big cannons go boom throughout the day. Entry is free, gates are open so you can wander around and poke into all the museum rooms. Theyre running shorter tunnel tours at 30 minutes each, and kids slip in gratis, which is handy for keeping the little terrors entertained. Youll spot Morse code demos tapping away, some military vehicles parked up for a gander, plus the Newcastle RSL Pipe Band piping up and the Australian Armed Forces Reenactment Heritage Unit doing their historical dressup bit.
Grab a coffee from the cart or some hot tucker if youre peckish. Extra parking is sorted at the Nobbys Road Overflow area, so no excuses for not turning up. Disabled access is on offer too, just give the operators a bell for the details.
