Georgia O'Keeffe (1887 to 1986) became, for lack of a better word, legendary. She emerged as the preeminent modernist painter in early 20th century America at a time when painting was often seen as an odd career choice for women, and she did much of it from the relative solitude of Northern New Mexico rather than the bright lights of New York. This illustrated lecture takes in her iconic landscapes, cityscapes, skull paintings and those famously outsized flower works, and teases out the question of how much of her public image and career was shaped by the photographer and influential gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who also happened to be her husband.
Presenter Lydia Bauman holds a BA in Fine Art and an MA in History of Art and splits her time between painting, exhibiting and lecturing. Light refreshments will be served after the lecture, offering members and guests a chance to meet the lecturer, ask questions, or quietly debate whether a skull is a still life or a prop for existential contemplation.
