is a nostalgic trip down memory lane to a time when folks weren't just surviving—they were thriving, even while grappling with the struggles of the Great Depression in the 1920s and 1930s. This unique exhibition shines a spotlight on an unofficial "suburb" of Newcastle, just a hop, skip, and a jump from Jesmond. It's all about the resilient characters who turned a bunch of hardships into a lively community, crafting homes and lives filled with creativity and grit. With a mix of archaeological finds, photographs, and stories from those who were actually there, it's like a time capsule that's opened up a debate about our current housing woes while giving an insight into the everyday lives of those resourceful souls.
Put on by Newcastle Museum with a sprinkle of help from the NSW Government, this exhibition also owes its success to a slew of hardworking partners who captured the essence of Hollywood—wherever that may be—in their various roles. From archaeological excavations to breath-catching videography and 2D design that's more eye-catching than a seagull snatching your chips, it's a collaborative effort that deserves a nod. A big shoutout goes to the community members who shared their treasures of stories, including some legends like Tim Adams and Barbara McCarthy. Plus, let's not forget that this land belonged to the Awabakal peoples long before it became our little Hollywood, and we tip our hats to their enduring connection to this place, carrying on through everything.
