The Australian Chamber Orchestra marks its 50th year in 2025 and this programme, , asks what happens when music tries to mend a soul. The concert is led by ACO principal cello Timo Veikko Valve and features recorder player Genevieve Lacey. Expect a mix of ancient and brand new: Hildegard von Bingen's medieval songs, Melody Eötvös's Meraki, Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight, a new piece by Pulitzer Prize winning composer David Lang, P?teris Vasks's Musica Serena, a Baroque fantasia featuring Monteverdi Strozzi and Vivaldi with contributions from Erkki Veltheim, and the third movement of Beethoven's String Quartet in A minor Op. 132 Molto adagio Holy Song of Thanksgiving, arranged by Timo Veikko Valve. Some pieces were specially commissioned by the ACO and the Lang premiere is supported by Ulrike Klein AO.
If you want a short label for the evening, think of it as a two hour musical first aid kit full of balm, clarity and the occasional goosebump. Running time is about 120 minutes including interval. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
